Mordants are the fixing agents in natural dyeing and are usually comprised of metal salts. They create the link between dye and fibre and influence the final colour. This workshop will introduce participants to the possibilities of gradients with natural dyeing using two different mordents. We'll explore the mordanting steps / pre-treatment of the yarn with alum and iron at varying ratios, the dye extraction, and dyeing of the skeins, as well as touch upon some of the theory and varied applications of natural dyes. All materials will be supplied for this one day workshop, and you will go home with 5 mini-skeins of your own naturally dyed yarn in a gradient colorway.
Previous natural dyeing experience is recommend for this workshop. If you would like to participate and have never dyed yarn before we suggest taking the Intro to Natural Dyeing workshop first.
